Linux Counter Logo Asking for money for a new machine

Aleph has been a great machine.

However, it's dying. Architecturally, it's out of touch, and performance-wise, it's so-so. More power is cheap.

I went out on a limb and bought some components, and have put together a new server at my house - currently evaluating. If everything goes the way I want it to, this will be a pure front-end web server - no mail, no repository, perhaps not even report generation. But it needs to be running.

Buying a new cabinet, motherboard, CD-ROM, AMD Athlon 3200 processor and 1 GB RAM set me back NOK 5.072 (USD 822, EUR 615). I had a spare disk lying around. No floppy needed!

The resulting host is called "gimel" (the letter after aleph and beth), and seems snappy - but it's taking its time to finish its configuration (of course).

The cost of this machine was NOK 5.072 (approximately USD 822, EUR 615). I would like to ask the Linux Counter user community for help to cover this cost. Thank-you notes for money received will be added to the accounting page.

Contributions can be sent via PayPal or MoneyBookers to my account . Ten to twenty dollars would be a reasonable contribution - I'll put a "please stop" note on this page once the cost has been recovered; I don't want to try to make money from this effort!
